Climate Change

Climate Change

Hokkaido is located in cold country, and characteristically consumes large amounts of fossil fuel due to the use of heaters in winter time. As a result, CO2 emissions per person exceed the national average, and promotion of approaches in the household department is been urgent. On the other hand, the land is easily affected by climate change since it is a major agricultural and fishery production area, demanding approaches from both aspects, relief measures and adaption measures, for the climate change.

This foundation seeks to implement and support climate change measures in consideration of actual conditions and issues of each area of Hokkaido, with government and local activity organizations as our partners.

Cooperation and Coordination with the Government

Cooperation and Coordination with the Government

This foundation works to plan and implement countermeasures for climate change in each area, in coordination with the government. Development of behavior modification projects using methods of environment point, etc., based on survey of total CO2 emissions amounts and lifestyles of each area, and model projects of small-scale recyclable energy using woody biomass in the region, have been carried out.

Public Awareness by the Residents

Public Awareness by the Residents

We carry out countermeasures at the household level, which is a major source of CO2 emissions in Hokkaido. In coordination with Hokkaido Climate Change Action officers consigned by the governor, public awareness activities, such as lectures on the environment are carried out, such as promoting the replacement of old refrigerators and lighting which occupy a major part of electricity use in a household, and a household eco diagnosis system is implemented.

Promotion of Carbon Offsetting

Promotion of Carbon Offsetting

For CO2 which cannot be reduced even after efforts in energy saving, we promote approaches such as carbon offsetting. In addition, the creation and sales of J-Credit for use in carbon offsetting, calculating CO2 absorption by forests in each area of Hokkaido, and providing developmental support are carried out.
